The "Real People" option is generally easier, spoken language. More useful for informal conversations.

The articles use more difficult, formal language which is better for writing and formal situations like debates. I would suggest reading the opinions first, and reading the articles in your own time if you feel inclined.

Midterms A2015

Intensive English Midterm Guide
Autumn 2015

Fluency            10         Can you speak without pausing, with proper speed and intonation?

Details:

w  You will work in groups of three, chosen randomly by me.
w  Please arrive 10 minutes early for your exam.
w  Do not knock on my door – I will come out to get you when I’m ready.
w  When you come into my office, give me your vocabulary notebook, and sit down at a table with 18 cards on it. Don’t touch them!
w  When I say, you will have 3 minutes to choose 6 cards together and think about what you will talk about. You may talk during this time.
w  You will then have 9 minutes to talk about the subjects on the cards. (This means you have about 1 minute 30 seconds to talk about each card.)
w  You do not have to talk about every card, but you must you show me what you have learned in class.
w  Talking is your responsibility. If you don’t talk, your grade will be low!
w  That said, give the others in your group a chance to speak – I will reduce your score if you talk too much without giving others a chance.

What to Study

Vocab notebook - Make sure you know and can use the vocabulary you’ve been learning in class in different situations and without difficultly. I expect you to use this during your exam.

Keep learning - As you study keep note of new vocabulary you learn. Just because you are reviewing doesn’t mean you can’t learn more! You can even learn during your exam!

Being polite - You may have noticed that a lot of what we have learned is about being polite. This is difficult in English, but generally when you use longer, more difficult language, it is more polite. Make sure you can speak both formally and casually!

Unit 1 – Describing Yourself and Your Values                   Lessons 1 - 4
Lesson 1            p. 2       Talk about complicated family relationships.
Lesson 2            p. 4       Describe people using adjectives and explain your description.
Lesson 3            p. 6       Compare and contrast people.
Lesson 4        p. 8       Interrupt politely and return to the original subject smoothly.

Unit 2 – Talking About Problems Politely                          Lessons 5 - 8
Lesson 5            p. 12     Interact politely as / with a clerk.
Lesson 6            p. 14     Express rules in short and long form.
Lesson 7            p. 16     Bring up and solve problems using situational vocabulary.
Lesson 8        p. 18     Proactively offer help, and accept or decline it politely.

Unit 3 – Being Indirect in Formal Situations                    Lessons 9 - 12
Lesson 9        p. 22     Being polite by asking questions indirectly.
Lesson 10          p. 24     Point out mistakes without being rude. Apologize appropriately.
Lesson 11           p. 26     Make polite requests – not just appointments! Confirm information.
